In continuation of my series AI for K-12, I am going to share with you a list I have curated of the top 10 AI tools for second grade. In a recent article published on the Schooling America blog, AI for First Grade, I shared a fun and engaging activity that teachers can use to introduce the concept of Generative AI to their first grade students. As an AI education and homeschool consultant, I find this activity ideal for smaller group settings. I highly encourage you to explore it and adapt it for your second grade students–it’s engaging, inclusive, and easy to replicate!
Before we get into the bread and butter of this article, I want to share a bit about my teaching philosophy, and how it ties into this article. My approach is rooted in child development and cognitive neuroscience, and how these two fields can be tied to education. When we take an informed approach and synergize child development with neuroscience and core state standards, we have the opportunity to first connect with our biology and maximize our potential, and then understand how AI can fill the gaps and bring learning further. This allows us to remain connected and in touch with our genuine human potential, and then use AI as a supplement to go the extra mile.
Developmental Milestones for Second Grade
It’s fundamental to understand the psychology and development of our students in order to gather and design developmentally appropriate learning materials. Before we dive into the top AI tools for students and teachers, let’s refresh our basic knowledge of developmental milestones for second grade, as published by Understood :
Cognitive Development
Students have enhanced problem-solving skills, a better understanding of cause-and-effect, an improved attention span, and planning abilities. At this age students may also try out different types of writing, like narratives and opinion papers.
Language Skills
Teachers witness advancements in reading comprehension, vocabulary, and varied writing styles. Students begin to really comprehend what they read, moving from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.”
Social and Emotional Growth
At this age students also work on forming close friendships, managing emotions, and begin to see others’ perspectives.
I have taught for about five years now, and have learned it’s indispensable to be aware of child development milestones when teaching various groups of children. When we take an informed approach as such, we can apply the knowledge to the core state standards and maximize the learning and teaching potential of our students. Furthermore, when we pair this knowledge with the abundance of resources and capabilities of AI technology we will be able to understand how to lesson plan on a deeper level and break down complex ideas such as AI to our children. With that being said, let’s delve into the list of tools I have made just for you!
Top 10 AI tools for Second Grade
Schooling America has searched the web and curated a list of AI games and online resources at the second grade level.
Here are the following AI tools I recommend for students in second grade:
1. AIVA
AIVA is an acronym for AI Virtual Artist, which is exactly what this AI tool is all about. AIVA is a free tool that kids can use to create quality musical compositions of various different lengths and styles. Students have the option to choose from classical, epic, hip-hop, jazz, and many other genres. This is a super fun AI tool for second grade because it introduces students to the idea of coding but makes it fun and engaging at a developmentally appropriate level. Students can use this tool to create soundtracks to movies, school projects, games, and even just to enjoy your own music. With AIVA, students get to foster creativity through play, which is perfect for students at the second grade level.
2. Code.org – AI for Oceans
One excellent free AI tool second grade is Code.org’s AI for Oceans, which teaches students about artificial intelligence, machine learning, training data, and bias through fun activities. Students will first watch a short informational video about machine learning, and how to train machines using data. Then, students will put their knowledge into practice by sorting through garbage and fish while training their AI robot how to tell the difference. While your student is playing, fact bubbles will pop up about the ocean. Then the robot will be on its own, sorting through the trash based on the training that the student provided it with. This is a really great AI tool for second graders because it taps into current events, and gives them an active role in training a machine, ultimately making AI a concept that they can directly apply and understand.
3. Quick, Draw!
Quick, Draw! Is a free AI tool created by Google. Similar to the concept behind Code.org, students are directly interacting with AI to train it on the data we can provide. Students will essentially play a guessing game with the AI, where they will be asked to draw an object or idea, and then the AI will have to guess what they drew. The catch is, they will have to draw the object in 20 seconds, and the AI will guess your drawing as you go. Second grade students really get a kick out of this game, and it’s overall a great tool for teachers to use as a supplement to a lesson about AI.
4. Duolingo
Duolingo is a popular freemium language learning app designed to be engaging and user-friendly and has been around for over 14 years. For second graders, it gamifies language learning through interactive lessons, flashcards, and quizzes. Its bite-sized lessons make it easy for young learners to absorb new vocabulary and grammar at their own pace. Duolingo now uses AI to personalize lessons, adapting to each student’s progress and offering targeted practice where needed. This AI-driven approach helps keep students motivated and ensures they stay challenged without feeling overwhelmed, making it a great AI tool for second grade learners.
5. Moose Math
Moose Math is an engaging app for early second graders that features five fun math activities to reinforce those basic, foundational skills. Activities like “Moose Juice” and “Pet Bingo” help with counting, addition, and subtraction, while “Lost & Found” teaches shapes and colors. This app uses AI to personalize learning to each child’s pace, keeping them challenged without overwhelming them. It aligns with Common Core standards that teach number relationships, counting, addition, subtraction, geometry, and measurement, with progress tracked in a report card for teachers and parents. It’s also a really great resource for students struggling with math who are behind a grade level or two.
6. Brainly
Brainly is an app that allows students or parents to ask questions about homework across various subjects and get answers from experts. Students also have the ability to answer questions to win points. Their new AI Test Prep integration is a great tool as it allows you to create a study set in minutes. Students, parents, or teachers can pick example questions for an AI Generated practice quiz containing random questions.
7. BrainPOP
BrainPOP AI uses interactive videos, quizzes, and activities to teach a wide range of subjects, including math, science, and language arts. For second graders, a great lesson for learning about AI and the digital world would be their Digital Citizenship module. The AI-powered platform helps students grasp key concepts through engaging animations and assessments. A great feature about BrainPOP is that teachers can track progress, ensuring students stay on track with their learning goals. BrainPOP is a great AI tool for second grade because it promotes active learning and supports critical thinking in a fun, accessible way.
