For teachers, the concept of “saving time” is more nuanced than it might appear. We often find ourselves caught between the desire to provide meaningful feedback to our students and the practical limitations of time and energy. This balancing act is at the heart of why we created CoGrader, and it’s a challenge that resonates with teachers across the globe.

The Myth of Teacher Time

It is a common misconception that teachers can simply “work their contract” to reclaim their personal time. However, the reality is far more complex.

Andrew, our resident educator, summarizes it well: “It’s easier to get teachers to take time off work than it is to get them to stop doing work off the clock. It’s extreme, but akin to asking nurses to walk away from a coding patient when it’s time for them to clock out.”

This dedication might stem from the “missionary” mindset that is deep-rooted in the history of education. Many people see teaching as a calling rather than merely an occupation, which is why it is an invaluable part of our social fabric — but it has also led to unrealistic expectations that teachers should always be “on”.

At CoGrader, when we talk about saving time, we’re not just talking about reducing work hours. We’re talking about redirecting valuable time and energy towards what matters most: supporting students.

As Gil, our co-founder, emphasizes: “Saving time leads to the question: what else can happen with that time? For many teachers, it’s about having more time and mindspace to focus on student needs.”

The Problem with Traditional Grades

CoGrader’s AI-powered grading assistant enables teachers to provide more meaningful, timely feedback without sacrificing their personal lives.

Traditional grading systems rank students, based on a normal curve (A = Great, B = Good, C = Average, D-F = Unsatisfactory), but do not always provide actionable feedback or relative performance against specific standards. Teachers are feeling the pressure of online gradebooks, the emphasis on student assessments and increased pressure to update grades frequently. We are seeing more “completion grades” that mean less.

This is where CoGrader comes in. We’re not just about saving time; we’re about transforming the grading process to better serve both teachers and students. Our platform:

  1. Provides specific, standards-aligned feedback quickly, allowing teachers to focus on addressing individual student needs.
  2. Helps schools identify and bridge “learning gaps” with actionable data, not just letter grades.
  3. Enables teachers to give more frequent, meaningful feedback without burning out.
  4. Supports a shift from ranking students to measuring them against clear standards and expectations.

The Future of Grading

It’s crucial to remember that the original purpose of grades was feedback. CoGrader aims to return to this core principle, providing teachers with tools to give rapid, insightful feedback that truly helps students improve.

For schools and districts, CoGrader offers a way to gather and analyze meaningful data about student performance, allowing for more targeted interventions and support.

By reimagining the grading process, we can create a win-win situation: teachers reclaim valuable time and energy, while students receive more meaningful, actionable feedback. At CoGrader, we’re committed to making this vision a reality, one assignment at a time.
